How does EMDR work?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy goes beyond talk therapy and helps get to the root of the things you are struggling with. Sometimes when we go through difficult things, our brain does not fully process these experiences and they get “stuck” in unhelpful ways. EMDR uses eye movements or other types of bilateral stimulation (tones, tapping, etc.) to activate the brain’s natural healing process and help you reprocess and resolve past memories. Think of it as a computer that has a glitch. Doing EMDR can be like rebooting the computer so that it can function properly moving forward.

How Do You Know When You Need EMDR Therapy?

A common misconception about EMDR is that a person has to have gone through a big and obviously traumatic experience to be able to do EMDR (such as abuse or a car accident). While EMDR is definitely helpful for these types of experiences, it can also be used to process any difficult experience you have been through no matter how big or small it seems. For example, maybe you had experiences growing up where you felt like you had to take care of everyone else and your needs didn’t matter which has led to you constantly neglecting yourself. Reprocessing these types of experiences can help you change the way you view yourself, others, and the world in a way that better fits the life you want to live.

The bottom line is, EMDR therapy could be helpful if you…

Have any experiences from your past that you feel are affecting how you view yourself.

Feel like your nervous system is always on edge and you don’t know why.

Want something that goes deeper than talk therapy and gets to the root of the problem.

Have questions about EMDR therapy?

Q&A
  • Talk therapy helps you understand your past, but EMDR helps your brain heal from it. In talk therapy you process with words, while in EMDR you use eye movements, tapping, or sounds to activate your brain’s natural healing.

  • Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR does not require you to talk in detail about your experiences. Most of the processing is done in your mind rather than out loud.

  • Yes, you can absolutely do virtual EMDR sessions! Many clients appreciate the privacy and convenience of online EMDR therapy.
